Despite there not being a full band of live musicians playing along with Herman on this track, or the rest of the album, there were moments where I thought he did have a band with him. The thing that stood out to me were the guitar solos and how the song was broken into sections. With heavy, intense distorted guitars and a rock anthem, death metal riff, this is Snail ContrailвЂ™s longest track вЂ“ oh and itвЂ™s all instrumental, too. (Note: If youвЂ™re a public radio broadcaster reading this now, please play this dudeвЂ™s stuff!) вЂњIn InfernoвЂќ turns up the heat even more вЂ“ pun intended. Overall, a unique mix of sounds вЂ“ itвЂ™s a shame this kind of music canвЂ™t get played on commercial radio these days. ThereвЂ™s something really goth metal that l liked here. вЂњEx Nihilo Nihil FitвЂќ has got a fantastic echoing drum sound, thick and low bass lines, and tense guitar parts вЂ“ one lead and one rhythm. ItвЂ™s especially relevant in our strange age of Covid. Lyrically, I thought this song was genius вЂ“ itвЂ™s about discovering how low the human psyche can go. In вЂњApathetic ComplacencyвЂќ I was hearing so much old and new styles and influences вЂ“ Bowie, Elbow, Radiohead and some other emo-indie bands that I canвЂ™t think of right now. The guitar solo/music break was really the highlight of the song for me, as well as the songвЂ™s ending measures. The lyrics are about a metaphorical glass bottle, perhaps a symbol for the state of the world as it is now. The drums here have a more traditional sound, while guitars and bass keep the melodyвЂ™s pace going. вЂњReflections On Living in a Glass BottleвЂќ begins with the вЂњsoundsвЂќ of a glass bottle reimagined on the keyboard. Overall, I really liked the piano melody, contrasting with the fantastic, repeating synth sounds. This one kind of reminded me of Thomas Dolby meets Kraftwerk meets New Order.

Parts of this number felt very industrial, too. вЂњNo More Bad DreamsвЂќ opens with an electronic synth sound вЂ“ very вЂ80s new wave, along with electronic drumbeats. Next is the albumвЂ™s title track вЂ“ вЂњFrom Nothing, Comes Nothing.вЂќ It is a very short song with heavy fuzz, bass lines, warbling and distorted guitar chords and a groovy, toe-tapping rhythm towards the end. There is a great fuzzy, garage rock guitar solo in this one as well. It opens with an ominous classic rock riff, a little psychedelic, a little theatrical вЂ“ think Deep Purple, King Crimson and Iron Butterfly. The opening track is called вЂњD.F.T.M.вЂќ ( aka вЂњdie for the marketвЂќ as the lyrics state). HermanвЂ™s biggest focus was making a 'true' solo album вЂ“ that is, recording, mixing and mastering everything by himself, including designing the album art, too. As a result, this full-length album explores a side of his songwriting ability that wasnвЂ™t previously explored. In Snail Contrail, Herman wanted to separate himself from this idea and develop songs naturally in Ableton. In his band Automata, they exclusively write the music in Musescore prior to recording it. Herman didn't set out to record this album with a specific sonic palette in mind, but rather to compile what came naturally to him. From Nothing, Comes Nothing contrasts music that makes you punch your drywall and music that makes you consider if punching said drywall was worth it. The entire album has a master tape plugin added to it to make it sound kind of thick and warm. When the song has been finalized, heвЂ™ll spend some time 'mixing' and 'mastering' the track but doesnвЂ™t really have any idea what he's doing in this regard. As a result of the eight-track limitation, any additional layers for the song, including vocals, is often done in Reaper. HermanвЂ™s creative process starts using Ableton Live Lite, where he begins the arrangement of the song.

The music for his debut From Nothing, Comes Nothing came from a вЂњsilly little bedroom in TexasвЂќ when he felt like laying down some tracks. Snail Contrail is the indie solo project of Michael Herman, which explores the creative influences outside of his band Automata.
